Product description
This antique lacquered low cabinet in pine wood is a Chinese kang cabinet with three drawers, two side doors and a shelved central recess. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where pine was finished with oil lacquer in an ochre tone. Thirty centimetres high: below any Western side table. The measure belongs to furniture placed on the kang platform, at the height of someone seated cross-legged, and it explains why these pieces work so well today as coffee tables. The case is solid pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery. Three drawers align beneath the top, two panel doors close the side modules and the central recess retains its shelf. The pulls are iron rings on rosettes and the stiles continue into short feet. The ochre lacquer has worn until the pine shows through on the top and on the most handled fronts. Where it survives it keeps a warm, almost honeyed tone, with dark marks of use. The surface is even and without repaint. It works in wabi-sabi, japandi and contemporary interiors of warm palette, where a piece this low orders the space without occupying it visually.
