Product description
This antique lacquered low cabinet in elm wood is a Chinese kang cabinet with three drawers, two side doors and an open central recess. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where elm was covered in orange oil lacquer. Twenty centimetres deep: the measure gives it away. This is a piece made to stand on the kang itself, the heated platform, against the wall and within reach of someone seated on the floor. Nothing deeper would have fitted without invading the sleeping space. The case is solid elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery and rounded upper corners. Three drawers align beneath the top, two panel doors close the side modules and the central recess retains its full-width shelf. The pulls are iron rings on rosettes. The orange lacquer has been reduced to patches over the wood, denser on the doors and almost gone from the top. Beneath it the elm shows a wide, dark grain. The edges are rounded by handling and the surface has not been retouched. Its minimal depth suits a narrow corridor, the foot of a bed or a living room where a conventional console will not fit. It sits well in wabi-sabi and japandi interiors, where wear is part of the appeal.
