Product description
This antique lacquered cabinet in pine wood features an upper band with four small drawers, two central doors and a lower panel with painted compartments. The entire surface is painted in heavily worn original vermilion red. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where pine was worked using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and finished with red paint. Vermilion red over wood was the classical finish of Chinese domestic furniture of some standing. It served both as wood protection and as a mark of prestige: red was associated with prosperity, celebration and fortune. Tall cabinets with upper drawers and central doors stood in main rooms and bedrooms. The body is built in solid pine. The upper band holds four small aligned drawers with rectangular hand-forged iron pulls. Below, two central doors with central iron lock open to an inner compartment. The lower panel is divided into five painted compartments with perimeter frames. The sides are solid. The construction is traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon, without metal fasteners. The original vermilion red paint shows a layered aging: in areas of continuous use the pigment has worn revealing raw pine in warm tones, while on central surfaces it keeps saturation. This layering — paint, flaking, wood — is one of the most valued traits of Chinese lacquered furniture. The iron hardware presents stable oxidation. With its 100 cm height and almost square plan, this cabinet works as an anchor piece in bedrooms, living rooms and entrances. It brings a strong chromatic accent into light and serene interiors. It suits wabi-sabi, japandi, contemporary eclectic and Asian-inspired interiors.
