Product description
This antique kitchen table in pine wood carries a frieze drawer with a porcelain knob and stands on four squared legs tied by an H-stretcher. Originates from Central Europe, from the early twentieth century, where pine was joined with mortise-and-tenon work and painted in lime colours.
The white porcelain knob places the piece from the 1880s onward, when this fitting became general in European domestic furniture. The H-stretcher set low was the usual way to stiffen a work table without getting in the way of the knees.
The frieze houses a full-depth drawer running on wooden bearers. The legs are square in section, tapering slightly toward the foot. The top is made of pine boards with the joints now parted and the arrises softened by handling.
The muted pink of the base has flaked back to reveal the wood and an ochre layer beneath. The top, left unfinished, has settled into a honey tone stained around the drawer. This is the wear a table earns from daily use across decades.
It serves as a small dining table, a desk, or a work surface in an open kitchen. Its faded pink brings colour without dominating the room and sits well in rustic or Scandinavian interiors.
