Product description
This antique Japanese tansu chest is a chest of drawers in wood with iron hardware. It originates from Japan, from the Meiji period, when the tansu organised the clothes and goods of the home. The tansu was the storage piece par excellence of the Japanese home, meant to keep kimonos, documents or utensils. Its sober construction prioritises function and solidity. The body is of wood, probably zelkova (keyaki), with two columns of drawers and a small door compartment. The pulls and reinforcements are of forged iron. The wood keeps a warm patina and the hardware its dark tone. The surface reads authentic, with no restoration to mask it. Today it serves as a bedside piece, side cabinet or open storage. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and minimalist interiors, where it brings warmth and material presence.
