Antique Japanese storage chest with removable lid, made of sugi cedar and dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho period, circa 1890–1920.
This type of Japanese storage chest nagamochi / funabako type was traditionally used in households to store textiles, clothing or personal belongings. Its simple and sturdy construction helped protect items from dust and humidity.
The piece is made from sugi (Japanese cedar), a lightweight and aromatic wood widely used in traditional Japanese carpentry. Sugi offered excellent resistance to humidity, making it ideal for textile storage.
The top lid is removable, allowing easy access to the interior. This type of construction was common in traditional Japanese household storage chests.
The surface retains a natural patina with signs of age and use, developed over decades of everyday use. These marks enhance the authenticity of antique Japanese furniture.
Today this piece can be used as a storage chest, low table or decorative trunk in contemporary interiors inspired by japandi, wabi-sabi or minimalist design.
