Product description
This is an antique Japanese small chest of drawers, dating from the Meiji period around 1900. The piece exemplifies traditional Japanese joinery and functional design, presenting a compact and utilitarian form with significant historical character.
Crafted from solid wood, the chest features a dark, ebonised finish that has developed a deep patina over time. It is configured with six drawers of varying sizes, arranged asymmetrically, providing versatile storage. The hardware, including the simple ring pulls and a decorative lock plate, appears to be hand-forged iron, consistent with the craftsmanship of the era. This type of small cabinet, known as a 'ko-dansu', was typically used for storing small personal items.
The chest is presented in its original condition, bearing the authentic marks of more than a century of use. The surfaces show considerable wear, which contributes to its rustic and storied aesthetic. The integrity of the construction remains, and all drawers are functional, showcasing the durability of its original build.
With its modest footprint, this piece is well-suited for placement on a larger piece of furniture, such as a desk or sideboard, or as a standalone accent on a low table. It would integrate seamlessly into interiors with a focus on rustic, Wabi-Sabi, or Asian-inspired decor, adding a layer of texture and history.
