Antique Japanese Nichiren Daishonin from the Meiji period Origin: Japan Dating: ca. 1870–1900, Meiji period Material: hand-carved wood, black lacquer, gilded wooden altar base, and old textile/brocade Dimensions: H 24.3 × W 18.7 × D 11.6 cm Weight: 900 g Depiction: Nichiren Daishonin (1222–1282), seated as a Buddhist monk Nichiren Daishonin The figure represents Nichiren Daishonin, founder of the Nichiren tradition within Japanese Buddhism. He is depicted seated with a shaved head, serene expression, and monastic robes, placed on a layered altar base. Original Kesa and Brocade A special feature of this piece is the presence of the old textile covering. The kesa and surrounding brocade layers are heavily weathered, with fraying, holes, and material loss, but still form an essential part of the historical presentation of the sculpture. Red, grey, and beige textiles are arranged in multiple layers around the figure and cushions. Gilded Altar Base The monk sits on a multi-layered wooden altar base with gold-colored lacquer and carved floral decoration on the front. Wear, dark patina, small losses, and signs of use are visible across the base and are consistent with long-term devotional use. Condition The wooden figure is structurally preserved. The lacquer and gilding show age-related wear and localized losses. The textile is heavily weathered with tears, holes, fraying, and missing parts. Precisely these old layers give the object a distinct historical and devotional character.
