Antique Japanese Meiji/Taisho Cloisonné Vase – Ba Xian – ca. 1910 This rare bronze baluster vase is a splendid example of Japanese craftsmanship from the early 20th century. Although the decoration depicts the 'Eight Immortals' (Ba Xian) from Chinese mythology, the technical execution — including the absence of markings and the hand-engraved ground — unmistakably points to a Japanese origin for the international export market.
Exceptional Craftsmanship
In contrast to later Chinese productions, the enamel on this piece is manually recessed into the surface. The ground was meticulously engraved before enameling, which creates a beautiful sense of depth. The expressiveness of the figures and the geometric Y-pattern attest to the refinement achieved by Japanese bronze casters during this period.
Authenticity and Condition
Weighing 1.8 kg and standing 30.5 cm tall, this is a substantial collector's item. The vase displays a natural, accumulated patina and authentic mineralization within the cloisonné lines.
