This is an antique Japanese ko-dansu, a small chest of drawers, dating from the Meiji period around 1900. The piece is distinguished by its compact form and original, hand-forged iron hardware, which are characteristic of traditional Japanese cabinetmaking of the era. Crafted from wood, this ko-dansu features a dark, likely lacquered, finish that has developed a significant patina over more than a century. The cabinet is configured with five drawers: three long drawers and a pair of smaller drawers, providing varied storage. All drawers are fitted with their original iron lock plates and 'warabite' style bail handles, underscoring its authenticity and Japanese origin.
