Product description
This is an antique Japanese ko-dansu, or small chest of drawers, dating from the Meiji period around 1900. The piece is a fine example of traditional Japanese cabinetmaking, valued for its compact proportions and functional design, originally intended for storing small personal items.
Crafted from wood, this chest features a dark, likely lacquered, finish that has developed a distinct character over more than a century. It is configured with five drawers: a pair of smaller drawers arranged side-by-side at the top, above three full-width drawers below. Each drawer is fitted with simple, hand-forged iron ring pulls, which are characteristic of the period and style.
The chest is presented in its original condition, displaying a rich and authentic patina. The passage of time is evident in the wear to the dark finish, which has rubbed away in areas to reveal the lighter wood grain beneath, telling the story of its long history of use. The presence of Japanese calligraphy on the interior of a drawer adds a unique layer of historical provenance.
With its modest scale, this ko-dansu is a versatile piece. It can serve effectively as a distinctive side table, a nightstand with storage, or as a decorative object in a study or living area, bringing a touch of wabi-sabi aesthetic and historical depth to an interior.
