Antique polychrome wooden temple figure from India This large, hand-carved female figure belongs to Indian temple sculpture. The elegant hip stance, long braid, heavy jewelry, and geometrically elaborated lower garment indicate a female temple figure from a South or East Indian tradition. The exact identity cannot be definitively established by an unambiguous attribute. Therefore, the figure is deliberately no longer described as Lakshmi. The best current description is a nāyikā / surasundarī-type female attendant, such as found within temple, processional, and architectural sculptural programs. Surface and Polychromy The figure is carved from solid wood and retains several old pigment layers. In the deeper-lying areas, red, ocher yellow, black, and light ground layers are visible. Crazing, wear, and localized dark deposits extend across the surface and show prolonged aging. The dark zones are not presented here as evidence for a specific ritual smoke treatment, but as historical surface deposits. The underside and exposed parts show old carving, shrinkage, and signs of use. The surface has not been uniformly refinished, meaning that the historical patina has largely been preserved. Attribution India, probably South or East India, 18th–19th century. Current stylistic comparison points particularly towards traditions from Tamil Nadu and Odisha. A further regional refinement remains possible when the hand attribute can be definitively identified.
