Product description
An important antique bronze Buddha statue originating from Ladakh in the Western Himalayas, dating to the first half of the 19th century. The figure is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture that symbolises the moment of enlightenment, reflecting the restrained sculptural style characteristic of Ladakhi Buddhist art from this era. Traditionally hollow-cast in bronze, the sculpture was originally mercury-gilded with high-karat gold. It measures approximately 31 centimetres in height and presents a composed, meditative presence. The piece retains remnants of its original gilding in the recessed areas, while the raised surfaces reveal the naturally aged bronze beneath, confirming its historic authenticity without modern regilding or electroplating. The statue displays natural wear consistent with prolonged ritual handling and age, preserving its authentic character. UV examination confirms the integrity of the surviving gold finish, making it a significant devotional object. This sculpture serves as a meaningful addition for collectors of Himalayan Buddhist art and traditional casting techniques.
