Product description
This antique folk painted chest in pine is a flat-lidded chest with floral decoration of rosettes on a dark ground, now softly faded. It originates from Central Europe, from the mid-nineteenth century, within the tradition of the painted marriage chest.
Trunks and chests kept clothing, trousseau and household goods in the home, and also accompanied moves. Their hinged lid and robust body answered to everyday, lasting use.
The body is solid pine, with a flat lid, a plinth and an iron strap. The front is painted with rosettes and floral motifs on a dark ground, in a folk polychromy.
The floral motifs are an emblem of prosperity of the Central European marriage chest. The paint, much faded by time, reveals the pine, and the patina reads authentic, with no repainting.
For its format and decoration, it serves as a chest at the foot of the bed, a low table or an accent piece. It fits rustic, country and eclectic interiors, where it brings colour and narrative.
