Product description
This antique folk chest in pine is a flat-lidded chest with incised carving of rosettes and geometric motifs, on bracket feet. It originates from Central Europe, from the mid-nineteenth century, within the folk art of carved furniture. Trunks and chests kept clothing, trousseau and household goods in the home, and also accompanied moves. Their hinged lid and robust body answered to everyday, lasting use. The body is solid pine, with the front and sides covered in incised carving of compass-drawn rosettes and geometric bands. The joinery is traditional and the construction is solid. The rosette carving belongs to the solar and protective repertoire of folk art, and the pine keeps its natural tone with soft wear. The surface reads authentic, with no restoration to mask it. For its format and decoration, it serves as a chest at the foot of the bed, a low table or an accent piece. It fits rustic, country and eclectic interiors, where it brings colour and narrative.
