Object details Object: seated Gelug lama / Tibetan Buddhist teacher Origin: Tibet Dating: 18th to early 19th century, approx. 1750–1850 Material: fire-gilded copper alloy / bronze Dimensions: H 16.7 × W 10 cm Weight: 600 g Iconography: pandita hat, teaching gesture, and religious text Provenance: old Nepalese export seal, dated 1962 Tibetan Gelug Lama Fire-gilded portrait figure of a high lama from the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The characteristic high pandita hat with long side flaps, the raised right hand in a teaching gesture, and the bound religious manuscript in the left hand clearly place the sculpture within the iconographic tradition of learned Gelug masters. The iconography aligns with Panchen Lama-type portraits, but without an inscription, no specific incarnation is attributed. Casting and gilding The sculpture is hollow cast using the lost-wax technique. The open base shows old earth/clay core remnants and an irregular internal casting structure. Macro photographs show an old gold layer preserved in pores and recessed decoration, consistent with traditional mercury-amalgam fire gilding. Export Seal 1962 An old paper export label with a red wax seal is affixed to the sculpture. This seal is dated 1962 and documents the export via Nepal. The seal dates the export control, not the manufacture of the sculpture; an older Tibetan image could be exported via Nepal and receive an official export seal there. Condition Good antique condition with ample remnants of the original gilding, natural wear, and dark deposits in the recessed areas. The base is open and contains old core remnants. The 1962 export seal is preserved and forms an important part of the provenance. Not cleaned or restored to preserve these historical traces.
