Product description
Antique console table in elm wood, from China and the Qing Dynasty. Originates from northern China, from the mid-19th century, worked by local craftsmen specialised in mortise-and-tenon joinery. This type of table, greater in height than other Chinese consoles of the same period, was used as a domestic altar or support for objects of ceremonial value. The long solid elm top rests on four notably slender, straight legs, joined by a double horizontal stretcher that lends stability without adding visual weight to the piece. The wood shows a patina darkened by the passage of time, with use marks spread across the surface and small drying cracks typical of solid elm. In a high-ceilinged entryway or beside a staircase, its slender build and height give it strong decorative presence as a console.
