Product description
Antique bench in elm wood, from China. An everyday bench from rural China, dating to the late Qing dynasty.
In daily village life, the long, narrow bench was a seat, a shelf and an extra table depending on the hour of the day.
The seat, made from a single elm plank, rests on two pairs of splayed A-shaped legs joined by tenoned stretchers.
Red brushstrokes remain on the plank and on one leg, traces of the marks used to identify the bench.
Beside a bed, at the foot of a staircase or under a window, it is a discreet seat that holds books, baskets or blankets.
