Product description
Dowry chest in pine wood, hand-polychromed with floral motifs and dated 1891. A Central European piece of folk craftsmanship, halfway between a marriage trunk and a bridal chest, representative of 19th-century Carpathian folk art. In Carpathian tradition, this type of trunk — “bride’s chest” — formed part of the trousseau a young woman brought to her marriage. It held clothing, embroidered textiles and small household objects. The painted motifs — tulips, posies and garlands — are not decorative by chance: in Magyar iconography the tulip is an identity emblem, a symbol of fertility and new life, a constant in 19th-century folk art. It is built from pine boards joined with dovetails at the corners and reinforced with interior battens. The flat lid opens on wrought-iron hinges and retains its original lock plate. The front, divided into two framed panels, and the sides are decorated in tempera over a dark ground with garlands of red, blue and white tulips, green leaves and ribbons. On the front, the inscription “1891” dates the piece precisely — a prized detail in the folk-art market. The patina preserves all the expressiveness of daily use: the original polychromy shows natural wear on edges and rub areas, small localized losses and a warm darkening that unifies every pigment. The lid, more exposed, shows light scratches and marks typical of repeated closing. These traces are inseparable from the documentary and emotional value of the piece. With its saturated colour and narrative character, it works beautifully in contemporary rustic, bohemian or eclectic interiors, where it can serve as a blanket chest at the foot of the bed, a storage bench in an entrance, a coffee table with presence or a focal piece in a neutral-toned living room. Its generous size lets it hold its own against a sofa and organize a corner on its own.
