Product description
Antique dou grain measure in elm wood, from China. A cereal measuring box from the early 20th century.
The dou (斗) was the capacity measure used to weigh out and share grain in markets and granaries.
The wooden sides are joined with fine comb joints, with riveted iron brackets at the corners and the base, and two side lugs serve as handles. Black-painted characters remain on the front, heavily worn.
The wood has a dark reddish tone with deeper stains, and the iron shows a coppery rust patina.
On a low table, a shelf or in a kitchen, it serves as a container for fruit, kindling or plants.
