ProfessionalProduct description
Antique dou grain measure in elm wood, from China. A cereal measuring box from the late Qing dynasty.
The dou (斗) was the capacity measure used to weigh out and share grain in markets and granaries.
The four wooden sides are joined with fine comb joints, with iron brackets at the corners, and two side lugs serve as handles; one keeps an iron ring. One face carries the characters 復聚公記 (Fùjù gōng jì) painted in black, most likely the name of a trading house.
The wood has darkened to a deep brown, with the black ink still crisp and the iron covered in a dark patina.
On a low table, a shelf or in a kitchen, it serves as a container for fruit, kindling or plants.
