Product description
Antique dou grain measure in elm wood, from China. A cereal measuring box from the late Qing dynasty.
The dou (斗) was the capacity measure used to weigh out and share grain in markets and granaries.
The wooden sides are joined with comb joints, and a riveted iron strip with vertical iron tabs reinforces the rim and the corners.
The surface keeps dark stains and areas of worn pale wood, with the iron covered in brown rust.
On a low table, a shelf or in a kitchen, it serves as a container for fruit, kindling or plants.
