Product description
Antique dou grain measure in elm wood, from China. A cereal measuring box from the late Qing dynasty.
The dou (斗) was the capacity measure used to weigh out and share grain in markets and granaries.
The four wooden sides are joined with fine comb joints at the corners, reinforced with small iron brackets, and two side lugs serve as handles. One face carries the characters 耀明堂記 (Yàomíng táng jì) painted in black, most likely the name of the trading house.
The wood has taken on a dark honey tone with the passing of grain and hands, and the iron strip on the rim shows a brown patina.
On a low table, a shelf or in a kitchen, it serves as a container for fruit, kindling or plants.
