Product description
Antique dou grain measure in elm wood, from China. A cereal measuring box from the late Qing dynasty.
The dou (斗) was the capacity measure used to weigh out and share grain in markets and granaries.
The four wooden sides are joined with fine comb joints at the corners, and two side lugs serve as handles. One face carries the characters 官斗 (guān dǒu) painted in black, designating the official measure.
The wood has darkened with the passing of grain and hands, and the iron strip on the rim shows a brown patina.
On a low table, a shelf or in a kitchen, it serves as a container for fruit, kindling or plants.
