Product description
Antique dou grain measure in elm wood, from China. A cereal measuring box from the Qing dynasty.
The dou (斗) was the capacity measure used to weigh out and share grain in markets and granaries.
The plank sides are joined with comb joints at the corners and pointed forged-iron brackets, and a rounded wooden edge finishes the mouth.
The wood, a brownish grey with strongly marked grain, keeps traces of old dust and the iron shows deep rust.
On a low table, a shelf or in a kitchen, it serves as a container for fruit, kindling or plants.
