This antique console table in pine wood features a solid rectangular top on splayed legs reinforced by two horizontal stretchers on each side. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where pine was worked using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.
The splay-legged console table belongs to the vernacular register of northern Chinese furniture. It was used as a kitchen support, a work table in domestic settings or a console in a main room. The A-frame structure with double horizontal stretchers on each side is highly stable and allows heavy loads; it was common in rural houses of northern China during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The body is built in solid pine. The top is a thick board, slightly rounded along the front and back by use. The legs splay outward to the floor, tenoned directly into the top. Each side carries a pair of horizontal stretchers, one high and one low, that stiffen the structure. The construction is traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon, without metal fasteners.
The patina is a warm brown tone and shows the pine grain clearly. The top surface keeps marks of use: traces of utensils, darkening from handling and soft dents. The legs and stretchers display a darker tone characteristic of pine exposed to the air of kitchens and work areas. The whole has been kept complete.
With its 184 × 58 cm top and 80 cm height, this console table adapts to multiple uses. It works as a writing desk, as an auxiliary kitchen table in open layouts, as a long console or as a service table in a dining room. It fits wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic, japandi and Asian-inspired projects.
