Product description
Antique console table in elm wood, from China and the Qing Dynasty. Originates from northern China, from the mid-19th century, where elm was worked into flat panels joined by mortise and tenon. This type of narrow console table was placed against a wall in the traditional Chinese home, for holding ritual objects or everyday items. The rectangular top rests on two solid side panels, trestle-style, joined to each other by two horizontal stretchers with exposed tenons and wooden pegs. The wood has taken on a uniform, darkened patina, with longitudinal drying cracks in the top and pronounced wear along the most-handled edges. In an entryway or against a wall in a contemporary living room, it works as a console table, bringing the geometric solidity of its side panels.
