Antique console table in elm wood, from China. Originates from Qing dynasty domestic furniture, when this long, narrow type of table was placed against a wall for family worship or as a support surface. Pieces of this format, known as altar tables or corridor consoles, were used to display ritual objects, vases, or household items. The long top rests on four legs splayed slightly outward at the ends, joined with mortise-and-tenon work, and braced by a double lower stretcher running the full length of the piece. The elm wood shows the golden patina and grain typical of generations of use, with the wooden pegs and wedges of traditional joinery visible on the surface. In an entryway, a hallway, or behind a sofa, it works as a decorative console, bringing the linear elegance and historical character of period Chinese furniture.
