Product description
Antique pine coffee table, a piece of traditional Chinese furniture originating from Shanxi and dating to around 1930. It comes from Shanxi, in northern China, from the early 20th century, where local pine was crafted using nail-free box-and-dovetail joints, with carved aprons and low crossbars.
In northern Chinese homes, low tables served as auxiliary surfaces next to the kang, raised platforms used for seating and as a place to rest. The piece was part of daily life: a place to set down teacups, a stand for books, a low work surface, or an informal dining table. Its design reflects the material culture of northern China, where household furniture was unobtrusive and functional.
It is constructed of solid pine using traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, without nails. The single-panel top rests on four square legs with lobed aprons carved at the long corners. The lower H-shaped crossbars reinforce the structure. The woodwork follows the style of northern Chinese provincial furniture.
The patina retains the warm tone of aged pine, with the grain forming deep lines across the tabletop. The finish is matte. The surface shows the wear and tear typical of prolonged household use, with marks, stains, and traces that time has blended into the wood. The structure remains solid.
It blends seamlessly into minimalist, Japandi, and contemporary rustic interiors. It can serve as a living room coffee table, a display stand for decorative objects, or a table for a tea ceremony. Its understated design allows it to be paired with pieces from various eras.
