This antique Chinese work table with drawers in solid wood, with two drawers with hand-forged iron hardware and cross-stretcher frame, is a utilitarian domestic piece from northern China around 1900. Originates from northern China, from the late Qing period, where local wood was worked using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.
Work tables with drawers were common pieces in rural and urban households of northern China during the Qing Dynasty. Their construction reflects regional carpentry: a tabletop of assembled planks, sliding drawers with iron ring pulls, and a leg structure with horizontal stretchers.
The top is formed by planks joined with tongue-and-groove joints and reinforced with cross battens. The two drawers slide on wooden guides and carry hand-forged iron ring pulls. The four straight legs are joined by horizontal stretchers at two heights.
The wood shows a warm honey patina with traces of use and deeper darkening at the contact surfaces. The wear on the top and drawers is consistent with over a century of domestic use.
This table integrates well into japandi, wabi-sabi or rustic contemporary interiors. It works as a writing desk, side table or entrance console.
