Product description
This antique Chinese papier-mâché container is a tapered vessel of laminated paper with cut-out decoration in black. It originates from China, from the Qing dynasty, when pressed paper was used to make light containers for domestic use. These papier-mâché containers served to store grain, textiles or household objects. They were built by laminating sheets of paper —often newspaper— over a mould, until a rigid, light wall was formed. The wall is pressed paper in several layers, with the original print still visible under the decoration. The interior keeps the bare paper; the exterior receives a painted layer. The decoration is a black cut-out over the pale ground of the paper: baskets and vases of peonies on the body, and a chrysanthemum border below the rim. The peony stands for wealth and honour; the chrysanthemum, for longevity and serene retirement. The palette is reduced to black on cream, with the pierced line proper to paper-cutting. The paper shows the wear proper to age: ochre tones, small losses at the rim and the aged print under the paint. The surface reads authentic, with no restoration to mask it. For its size and making, it serves as a decorative basket, plant holder or container for blankets and firewood. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and rustic interiors, where it brings warmth and material presence.
