This antique Chinese painted trunk in pine wood is a flat-lidded chest with polychrome decoration of lotus and auspicious motifs. It originates from China, from the late Qing dynasty, within the tradition of the Tibetan-style painted trunk.
The painted trunk kept textiles, household goods and valuables in the home, and its decorated face made it a piece of prestige. The paint on a dark ground followed floral and auspicious repertoires.
The body is solid pine, with a flat lid, iron hardware and traditional joinery. The structure keeps its original paint, with wear consistent with its age.
The front is painted with lotus and auspicious motifs on a dark ground, framed by floral borders and fretwork. The lotus and the fish (yu) form the auspicious wish of abundance year after year.
For its format and decoration, it serves as a chest at the foot of the bed, a low table or a storage piece with decorative value. It fits wabi-sabi, eclectic and Asian-feeling interiors, where it brings colour and narrative.
