This antique Chinese lift-top desk in solid pine, with an interior compartment and a forged iron latch, is a counter or writing piece from northern China around 1930. The piece bears no maker’s mark and is described by typology and region.
This typology served as a small shop counter or accounts desk in rural China, where the merchant stored ledgers, seals and small money under the hinged top. The standing-work height and lockable lid are characteristic of period counter furniture.
The frame stands on four square legs braced with low perimeter stretchers. The top, a solid panel set on rails, hinges open on wrought-iron straps and is secured by a long pass-through plate and hook latch. The interior is built as a box, with rebates to hold small accessories.
The patina is dark and grainy, a stained finish over pine with consistent wear on edges and lid. The ironwork shows a stable oxidised surface with no structural loss. No invasive restoration: the piece keeps the character of Republican-period utilitarian furniture.
It works as a singular piece in an entryway, a study with character or a side support in a quiet living room. Its closed silhouette and ironwork sit well in wabi-sabi, japandi or rustic-contemporary interiors, adding presence without clutter.
