This antique Chinese lidded papier-mâché box is a closed vessel of laminated paper, with a reddish surface. It originates from China, from the Qing dynasty, when pressed paper was used to make light containers for domestic use.
These papier-mâché boxes served to store textiles, documents or household objects. They were built by laminating sheets of paper over a mould, until a rigid, light wall was formed, and finished with a lid of the same material.
The wall is pressed paper in several layers, with a reddish coloured layer on the exterior. It keeps its lid, which fits over the mouth and protects the contents.
The reddish surface shows the wear proper to age: muted tones, small losses at the edges and marks of use. It reads authentic, with no restoration to mask it.
For its size and making, it serves as a decorative box, table container or piece of open storage. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and rustic interiors, where it brings warmth and material presence.
