This antique Chinese kang table in pine wood with large-format top and cylindrical legs with X-stretchers, is a rest and gathering piece from northern China around 1930. Originates from northern China, from the late Qing or early Republican period, where pine was the most accessible wood for large-scale domestic furniture.
The kang table (炕桌) is the centrepiece of the kang way of life, the heated platform characteristic of northern China. On the kang — and on this table — daily life unfolded: meals, writing and rest. Its low height and wide surface are defining features of the typology.
The top is formed by pine planks assembled with mortise-and-tenon joints, framed by a perimeter batten. The four cylindrical round-section legs are joined by X-stretchers at the centre. The construction is sturdy and unornamented.
The pine has developed a warm toasted patina with well-visible grain. The tabletop surfaces show the marks of prolonged use, characteristic of an everyday object.
This table suits japandi, wabi-sabi or minimalist interiors. Its low height makes it ideal as a floor coffee table, meditation platform or display surface.
