Product description
This antique Chinese console table with carved drawers in solid wood, with drawer fronts decorated with openwork huiwen pattern, three lower panels and openwork apron, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1900. Originates from northern China, from the late Qing period, where local wood was worked with openwork carving in traditional geometric patterns. The huiwen (回紋) motif is one of the most persistent decorative elements in Chinese furniture. This continuous rectilinear spiral symbolises eternity and uninterrupted continuity. Its presence on drawer fronts and aprons is typical of domestic furniture from the northern provinces during the Qing Dynasty. The top projects slightly at both ends. The two drawers carry fronts carved in low relief with the geometric huiwen pattern, with hand-forged iron ring pulls. Below the drawers, three vertical panels framed in straight moulding. The lower apron is also carved in geometric openwork. The wood has developed a warm patina in ochre and golden tones, with deeper darkening in the carved relief. The wear on the top is consistent with prolonged domestic use. This console suits japandi, wabi-sabi or orientalist eclectic interiors. The decorative richness of the front makes it particularly suited for a hall or living room.
