Product description
This antique carved polychrome low cabinet in pine is a Uyghur cabinet from Xinjiang with eight carved panels and shaped outer stiles. It originates from Xinjiang, in north-western China, from the Qing dynasty, where carving in pine was covered with brush-applied pigment. Cabinets like this occupied an entire wall of the receiving room and ordered domestic life horizontally, at the height of the low platform where people ate and slept. The case is solid pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery. Five of those panels open as doors onto separate compartments; the rest are fixed. The outer stiles are cut in waves and continue into stirrup feet; the back is closed with vertical boards. The eight panels alternate quatrefoil lattices with inscribed pointed arches, a profile taken from the local architectural opening. Upper and lower friezes repeat the lattice at smaller scale, and the mouldings are outlined in violet blue. The palette gathers pink, green, yellow, orange and violet; the outer stiles carry their shaped edge painted in coral red. The pigment has lost body and turned to a very soft pastel range. The top is bare, with open joints and marks of use. In the whole, a luminous front face coexists with a clean, unfinished wooden structure. Its length calls for a wide living room or a gallery. It works as a low cabinet beneath a run of windows or as a continuous sideboard in a large dining room, and brings colour without needing further ornament in the room.
