Antique Reclining Buddha from Burma An impressive and exceptionally expressive Buddha statue from Burma, present-day Myanmar, carved from teak wood and dated to the 19th century, probably the second half of the century, circa 1850–1900. With a length of 102 cm and a weight of 12.8 kg, the statue has a monumental presence, while its serene posture and subdued facial expression evoke an atmosphere of profound tranquility. The Buddha lies on his right side, with his head resting against his hand. The powerful silhouette, the finely detailed hair curls, and the rhythmically carved folds of the robe lend the statue both serenity and sculptural tension. The combination of black lacquer, red polychromy, and scattered remnants of old gilding gives the surface a rich, lived-in character. Iconography The reclining Buddha is one of the most recognizable representations in Buddhist art. The posture is associated with rest, inner peace, and the transition to parinirvana: the ultimate release after attaining full enlightenment.
