Monumental Antique Burmese Standing Buddha – Teak Temple Statue (166 cm)

This monumental standing Buddha is crafted from solid teak wood and is among the impressive religious sculptures from Myanmar (formerly Burma). Standing at an impressive 166 cm tall, the statue possesses a powerful, serene presence characteristic of traditional Burmese temple art. The sculpture depicts the historical Buddha in a tranquil standing posture. Its elegant bodily proportions, finely carved robe decorations, and gentle facial expression reflect the craftsmanship tradition for which Burma has been renowned for centuries. Remnants of the original gilding are still visible across the entire statue, forming a beautiful contrast with the deep dark brown to black lacquer layers.
Authentic Construction
During our research, several characteristics emerged that are consistent with a traditionally crafted temple statue. The monumental construction consists of multiple wooden parts, with natural shrinkage cracks visible, formed over many decades. Such cracks are a normal phenomenon in large wooden religious sculptures and convey much about their age and the type of wood used. In hidden places, multiple historical finishing layers are visible, including black lacquer, red ground layers, and remnants of gold leaf. This traditional construction method was employed for centuries within Burmese sculpture.
Original Finish
Remnants of the original gilding are present over almost the entire surface. On the prominent parts of the robe, hair curls, and face, wear has occurred due to prolonged exposure and touch, while in the deeper areas, gilded accents are still clearly visible. This natural wear significantly contributes to the authentic character of the statue. The refined decorations along the robe are richly executed and showcase the high quality of the carving. The eyes also appear to have been originally finished separately, a detail commonly found in older Burmese religious sculptures.
Origin and Dating
Based on style, construction, materials used, and finish, we date this statue to the late 19th to early 20th century. Its execution closely aligns with the Burmese tradition from the Konbaung period, during which monumental wooden Buddha statues were crafted for temples and monasteries. Although such statues were originally religious objects, today they are globally valued as important examples of Southeast Asian sculpture and form an impressive centerpiece within both private and museum collections.
Condition
Good antique condition, commensurate with its age. The statue exhibits natural shrinkage cracks, wear of the original gilding and lacquer layers, minor signs of use, and age-related characteristics befitting an authentic monumental temple statue.
