Burmese Mandalay Buddha of solid wood Origin: Myanmar (Burma), Mandalay Dating: approx. 1900–1930 Material: solid hand-carved wood, lacquer, gilding, and glass/mirror inlay Dimensions: H 50 × W 41 cm Weight: 4.8 kg Pose: seated Mudra: Bhumisparsha mudra Mandalay Style and Iconography This richly detailed wooden Buddha from Myanmar is executed in the classic Mandalay tradition. The figure is in a meditative pose with the right hand pointing downwards in Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture that refers to the moment when the Buddha calls upon the earth as a witness to his enlightenment. The left hand rests open in the lap. Gilded decoration and mirror inlay The sculpture is richly decorated with raised gilded lacquer decoration along the robe, base, and hairline. Small pieces of green, red, and mirrored glass are inlaid into the decorative bands. The eyes are also inlaid and give the face the characteristic refined appearance of early 20th-century Burmese temple sculpture. Solid wood construction The sculpture is constructed from solid wood and shows at the bottom the rough manual hollowing and chisel marks from the original carving. The construction, wood structure, and wear are consistent with an early 20th-century temple sculpture and clearly distinguish it from later decorative reproductions. Condition Good authentic collector's condition with age-related wear, small drying cracks, local losses to gilding, and some missing or damaged inlays. The overall structure is stable, and the sculpture presents strongly from all sides.
