Product description
An impressive Burmese seated Buddha, hand-carved from wood and finished with a deep black lacquered surface. The richly modeled robe, hair curls, and base are decorated with gilded relief and inlaid with small pieces of colored and mirrored glass. The dark, understated skin contrasts strongly with the warm gold and gives the sculpture a monumental appearance. **Iconography** The Buddha sits in virasana with the right hand pointing downwards along the knee in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture used to call the earth as a witness to his enlightenment. The left hand rests palm up in the lap. The downcast eyes, long earlobes, and high ushnisha depict spiritual tranquility, wisdom, and elevated insight. **Material and Surface** Carved wood with a black lacquered finish. The raised ornaments of the monastic robe, the hair, and the plinth bear old gilding. Small green, red, and clear glass elements and mirror pieces accentuate the edges and floral motifs. Macroscopic shots show the layered gilding, red ground, lacquer, and manually applied decoration. **Dating and Provenance** Burma/Myanmar, executed in the decorative Burmese tradition primarily associated with Mandalay.
