Antique bird feather painting (also called a feather picture).
This is a traditional technique in which real bird feathers are used to give the bird in the painting relief and realistic texture.
The bird is composed of real feathers, while the background, branches, and beak are usually painted with gouache or watercolor.
Many of these works date from the 19th century (Victorian era) or the early 20th century. They were popular decorative objects at the time.
The images are often ornithological in nature, intended to faithfully depict specific bird species such as thrushes or robins.
This type of artwork is vulnerable to light and moisture and is therefore practically behind glass. This painting is framed in its original, ornate, gilded wooden frame.
On the back of the painting, part of the label of the framer (R E Friez, Jonker Fransstraat in Rotterdam) that framed the painting is still visible. The bird painting is framed by a mat (23 x 18 cm).
The painting has some discoloration and stains.
Due to its age, the condition of the feathers is less than ideal in some areas.
