Product description
Antique Amphora Czechoslovakia Vase Dignitary Portrait Double Handles Enameled, Riessner Stellmacher Kessel Art Deco
circa 1918–1930s
A charming and unusual vase by Amphora, the celebrated Bohemian art pottery from Turn-Teplitz. Its playful sculptural form, jewel-like enamels and storybook decoration make it a real conversation piece.
The form
This is not an ordinary vase. Two looped cobalt-blue handles spring from the neck and curve down into two open side spouts on the shoulders, so the vase has three openings in total. The sculptural, almost architectural silhouette is typical of Amphora’s most inventive designs. The vase stands on a flared, decorated foot.
The decoration
Front: a round medallion with a bearded figure in a tall black hat and a long rose-pink robe, drawn in a stylised, Orientalist manner against a pale-blue ground and framed by a crown of green points and pink dots
Back: a striking geometric rosette medallion with white star-flowers, green scrolls and pink dots on a deep cobalt ground
All around: pale-blue stars scattered across a speckled, sandy textured background, which gives the whole vase a magical night-sky feeling
Neck: a band of enamelled roundels with pink dots and white fleur-de-lis shapes, above a garland of zigzag swags
Raised cobalt “cabochons” on the shoulders, like set gemstones
Every motif is outlined in raised lines and filled with glossy coloured enamels, in the cloisonné manner Amphora is famous for. The shiny enamels stand out beautifully against the matt, stone-like background.
Marks on the base
Printed oval mark: “Made in Czecho-Slovakia – AMPHORA”
Impressed model number
A small painted mark
Why it’s special
An unusual sculptural form. The triple-neck shape with looped handles and side spouts is far less common than standard Amphora vases.
Two completely different sides, a figurative portrait and a geometric rosette, so it’s a display piece from every angle.
Rich, hand-applied enamel work with raised outlines, jewel-like cabochons and a starry background.
A recognised maker. Amphora pottery is widely collected by lovers of Art Nouveau and Art Deco ceramics worldwide.
