Alsatian potters have for centuries crafted objects intended for everyday use. This stoneware pitcher is a beautiful heir to that tradition. Made from a light stoneware clay and then covered with a salt glaze, it displays the subtly satin and nuanced texture characteristic of the region's traditional productions. Its cobalt freehand decoration, with broad, spontaneous brushstrokes, gives it its full personality: no two pieces are exactly identical. The underside bears the inscription "Grès d'Alsace" (Alsatian Stoneware), a hallmark of artisanal productions from the second half of the 20th century, originating from the workshops of Betschdorf or Soufflenheim, two villages whose reputation extends far beyond the borders of Alsace. Since the 18th century, these workshops have been known for their remarkably robust utilitarian stoneware, capable of lasting through generations while retaining its authentic charm. With its balanced silhouette, generous pouring spout, and sturdy handle, this pitcher evokes the large family tables of yesteryear. Today, it will find its place equally well in a kitchen with character or as a decorative object, filled with dried flowers or simply displayed among a collection of antique stoneware. The piece is in good condition. There are a few small glaze chips and signs of use on the rim and on the base, natural testaments to its history, without affecting its presentation or its charm.
