Private sellerProduct description
This is an antique Japanese Choba Dansu, a traditional merchant's cabinet that combines functionality and aesthetics. This type of furniture, originating from the Edo period, was used by merchants to store their ledgers and valuables, which explains its complex layout with many compartments.
The cabinet is made of wood with a warm, deep brown finish that accentuates the natural wood grain. The piece features extensive hand-forged iron fittings, including decorative hinges, corner pieces, and a variety of handles, which not only provide sturdiness but also offer a strong visual contrast. The asymmetrical arrangement of sliding doors, hinged doors, and drawers of various sizes is characteristic of the Choba Dansu style and offers versatile storage space.
The overall condition of the cabinet is consistent with its age and shows a rich patina that reflects the character and history of the piece of furniture. The original construction and fittings have been preserved, contributing to its authenticity. The presence of old Japanese paper labels on the inside of some parts testifies to its origin.
With its unique silhouette and historical appeal, this Choba Dansu is a striking statement piece in various interior styles, from eclectic and rustic to minimalist. It can serve as a functional storage unit in a living room, study, or hallway, adding a layer of cultural depth and craftsmanship to the space.
