Product description
For sale: A beautifully preserved, original historical university beret (honorary beret) from Utrecht University, dating from approximately 1920. A unique and rare piece of academic heritage (studentica), custom-made at the time by the renowned Royal Hat House N. de Haan on the Steenweg in Utrecht. This example is richly detailed with historical elements and is in remarkably good antique condition: • Front: Hand-embroidered Latin university motto "Sol Justitiae" (Sun of Justice) in deep red letters on a linen/felt band. • Vignette: The original metal beret vignette of the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps (U.S.C.) in the form of the characteristic seven-pointed star with the central USC monogram. • Inside: The original brown leather sweatband contains a very detailed blind stamp (embossing) in which the seven-pointed corps star is flanked by two stylized mythical creatures (dragons). • Lining: The original cream/beige silk lining shows the authentic, slightly faded hatmaker's stamp of N. de Haan, Steenweg, Utrecht. This type of beret was worn in the early 20th century during lustra and official academic ceremonies.
