Product description
This object is an antique tin cookie or storage box (often used as a tea caddy or biscuit tin), decorated in the so-called Chinoiserie style. This type of tin box dates from the first half of the 20th century (circa 1920s to 1940s).
Dimensions:
Height: 27 cm
Width: 34 cm
Depth: 25 cm
The box is lacquered black/dark green and features a hand-painted or lithographic Oriental scene with a golden pagoda, oriental trees, mountains, and blossoms.
On the slightly convex lid, there is a characteristic metal handle with a wooden or twisted bamboo-look insert, which was typical for more luxurious storage boxes of that era to make carrying more comfortable.
At the front, there is a robust metal clasp (hinged closure). The back has sturdy band hinges.
The box has a weathered, brocante appearance with clear signs of age (patina, craquelure in the lacquer, and slight rust formation on the edges), which collectors of antique tin often appreciate. The clasps are broken, nice for decoration or storing items.
Such boxes were produced in Europe (among others by well-known tin manufacturers in the Netherlands, England, and Germany) for the storage of luxury items such as cookies, spices, or large quantities of tea.
