The watercolor was made in Germany. Date 14-11-1944. The work is signed, but unfortunately I cannot decipher the signature. On the left side is the preliminary study made and on the right the final result of Medusa. Medusa in Greek mythology was a girl in the temple of Athens and she was raped by Poseidon. Athena punished Medusa for being with Poseidon by giving her a monstrous head of snakes. Henceforth, her gaze turned people to stone. Medusa was thus punished for a crime of which she herself was the victim. What does Medusa symbolize? Medusa is often seen as a symbol of strength and survival. Her tragic story - in which she was cursed by Athena after being wronged - has led to a broader interpretation in which she is associated with female empowerment and protection.
