Product description
Figurative duck-shaped jug with folded wings and a cattail-shaped handle. Hand-painted with majolica glazes. Produced by the French factory of "San Clemente." The mark is located on the bottom of the jug's base and consists of "St Clement," "France," and the number "3," along with the numbers "7432," indicating a later production date. In very good condition, with clean colors, a sound glaze, and no cracks or breaks. Dimensions: 33 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 10 cm deep.
This jug belongs to a series of figurative absinthe jugs in the shape of a rooster and a parrot. Other jugs in this series include those shaped like a pig, rabbit, cat, monkey, and poodle, but these are rarer. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing more pieces.
Absinthe, also known as "The Green Fairy" or "The Green Devil," is the strongest alcoholic beverage known. It became popular in France, thanks to artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who believed it induced artistic inspiration. Oscar Wilde, Manet, Picasso, Degas, Hemingway, and others consumed it. It was under the influence of absinthe that Van Gogh cut off his earlobe and gave it to a young prostitute. Its production was banned in 1915.
