Product description
Designed by Børge Mogensen for FDB Møbler, this Danish A152 oak bookcase brings together a broad expanse of open shelving and a remarkably shallow profile. Introduced in 1964, the design places a simple, balanced cabinet above a diagonally braced base. That contrast gives the bookcase its character: practical storage with a distinct architectural silhouette.
A central divider separates the cabinet into two open bays, each fitted with two movable shelves. Rows of adjustment holes in the sides and divider allow the shelves to be positioned for different books and objects. The continuous top, back and lower shelf give the case a clear outline, while the slim shelf fronts and narrow edges keep the compartments open to view. Its width provides useful display space without the depth or visual enclosure of a conventional cabinet.
The raised base deserves particular attention. Straight legs and rails support the rectangular case, while diagonal braces create open triangular forms at both ends. These angled members give the lower part of the bookcase a more expressive rhythm without competing with the shelving above. The space beneath the cabinet also lifts its broad form visually clear of the floor.
Oak grain remains an important part of the composition, running relatively straight across the outer panels and showing more variation within the shelves and compartments. The oak-veneered case and oak base bring the storage and supporting structure together in a consistent material palette. Visible marks on the top and shelves, alongside differences in colour, are part of this example’s vintage character. In the A152, Mogensen’s interest in useful, adaptable furniture is expressed through an unusually well-resolved combination of open storage, restrained proportions and a memorable base.
